This painting started life as pre-landfill materials at Inner West institution Reverse Garbage. Namely - the canvas was sourced from there and stretched by hand, by me, over reconstructed stretcher bars that had been reclaimed, also from Reverse Garbage, from disassembled works. I fervently believe in looking at new uses for any discarded materials and relish the use of unconventional materials. This, ironically, is a relatively rare use of canvas - but naturally seeks to be as green as possible - and not just through the use of a deep emerald hue as a base.
Medusa stares defiantly at the viewer in a Greco-Roman style of statue. She, a darkly beautiful, bewitching sort of character, has been juxtaposed with a Nymphalis antiopa (also known as a Mourning cloak or a Camberwell beauty). I am looking for harmonies between the natural and the manmade, the hard and the soft, the ephemeral and the permanent.
