Grania is a kiln fired glass artist who began her practice in 2015 under the tutelage of Kate Baker. Since 2023, she has been working out of the One+2 Studio and Gallery, Balmain, Sydney. In 2020, she was a finalist in the National Emerging Art Glass Award. Her work has been shown in the Hunters Hill Art Exhibition, Soho Art Prize 2024 and the John Villiers Outback Prize in 2025. Each time I look inside the box of opaque, streaky and transparent off-cuts from larger sheets of glass, I choose certain colours to reflect the space and emotion that is within me or respond to the bigger external landscape in front of me. Inside the Box was developed with HOPE in mind, with the intention to bring light and optimism into a time that needs it most. Transparent glass is easier to read, recognise and decipher. It also creates shadows on the white board. Opaque glass is solid and, in this piece, anchors hope in reality. Streaky glass is a mix of colour and provides for greater movement and whimsy. It is variable by design hence no two pieces are the same. Once chosen, the placement and layout of the patterned piece is fully fused in a small kiln, transforming what was solid, into liquid, and then back to solid. This transformative process aims to show hope can be realised.
