I walked past this front yard for years, morning and afternoon to drop my children to primary school. I watched the mandarins flower and fruit, the begonia bloom, the sunlight slant and hit the bricks and the pots so they glow. Observing the front yards of the Inner West, in these often tiny patches of public-facing private property, I find wonder. Filled with subtropical splendour these sometimes messy, sometimes manicured enclaves are a vital connection to nature. They also serve as spaces of productivity, spirituality, culture and politics. A necessary, undercelebrated relief in the urban environment. A joy. My art is a record of these vital havens, the plants that surround us, in our daily lives.
