Adelaide artist Peter Drew's AUSSIE posters are designed to provoke thought and discussion around national identity. Who's an Aussie? What makes someone an Aussie? Do you have to be born here? Did you pass the dictation test? What's the colour of your skin? What's your faith?
Peter has been pasting them around national capitals for ten years, and once you've seen one, you can't stop seeing them. Sometimes graffitied over or torn down, but mostly left to the elements to gather their own patina and continue to prompt reflection.
Mrs Khazoom Coory and Mr Bella Singh, their images drawn from the National Archive of Australia, sit side by side on a brick wall. Above them, the silver metal facade reflects the sky, its surface rendered in hand stitched terracotta and iridescent blue, the colours so often associated with the Australian landscape. There is an irony in this palette, the same terracotta and blue tones drawn straight from the land itself.
Where the posters themselves are vulnerable to the elements or vandals, the considered and permanent hand embroidery offers a quiet and considered permanence, a way of continuing to hold these faces in place..........
Christine is a photographer and photo-embroidery artist whose practice bridges photography and textile arts. Maintaining a self directed practice from an early age, she has refined her visual language centred on people, art, design and the environment. Christine's photographic observation stands on its own as fine art in all genres. Through embroidery, she re-enters the photographic surface, introducing gesture, texture, and time. These intentional marks enhance and extend the image beyond its original frame, complimenting the image and creating bespoke artworks. Christine's work has been recognised in competitions and exhibited locally and internationally.
