My painting captures a familiar tree in my local park, during the gradual transition from summer to autumn. This tree is part of an everyday landscape I have come to know, yet this year it stood out for me. I was drawn to its vivid and contrasting colour changes. While the fresh greens remained among the branches, the upper canopy transformed into a spectacular show of yellow ochres, orange and russet. It was a real show stopper! I wanted to explore its colour and form in this moment of seasonal change. I felt that the transparency and fluidity of watercolour particularly suited the subject. It allowed me to mingle colours and leave areas of light between the marks, creating a sense of sunlight filtering through the canopy. I was interested in allowing the colours to coexist, rather than separating summer and autumn into distinct areas. I wanted my painting to be more an expression of transformation than a botanical study. I have lived in Sydney’s inner west for more than 20 years and for the last few years I have been sketching, painting and photographing my local parks, shops, buildings, animals and people. My works have been included in various exhibitions - The Greenway Prize, Incognito and Flowing. This is the second time I have participated in the Glebe Art Show. I am also an author, having written and illustrated a number of children’s books as part of 'The Chef Lulu' series. You can view and follow my art work on Instagram @fabart.online.
