The village of Cunjurong Point , on the south coast, where my family has a cottage, was saved from the devastating 2019/20 bush fires by a wind change and the incredible efforts of the Firefighters. One kilometre across Lake Conjola 130 houses were destroyed. When the roads in reopend we went in to help to clean up. The entire surrounding national park was burnt. Less the a week later with logs still smoking, the Double Drummer cicadas emerged from the ground, climbed blackened trunks, shed their crysalises and commenced their deafening mating song. A defiant symbol of renewal. I have painted several versions on this inspiring theme.
