The work speaks to the itinerant workers in NSW who helped establish small towns like Gunning. During the depression laid-off workers from cities like Wagga Wagga and Griffith went walk-about to find what work they could. They cleared land, sheared sheep, fencing - anything that would support a family in desperate need. Gunning was a stop point for a break from the drive to Hay from Sydney. It was a charming little town only a few hundred people. And I was moved by stories of how Gunning came to be. I took several photos of the landscape and was inspired by the tranquility and I knew the painting would come from many visits there. I am an artist with a practice in Sydney. I also teach painting and drawing to mature age students from my home in Rosebery. My students inspire me as much as I hope I inspire them. I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts UK.
