A passionate nature photographer for over two decades, I now view the world through a slightly different lens—one that envisions embroidery in every image. This creative shift began during the first COVID lockdown in 2020 and marked a profound transformation in my artistic practice. Not every photograph lends itself to embroidery; over time, I have developed a distinct photographic style designed specifically with stitching in mind. My work draws inspiration from the natural world—flowers, birds, forests, mosses, lichens, ferns, and rural landscapes. Each photograph is printed onto linen, a beautiful and tactile medium that invites the needle and thread. From there, I roughly plan my compositions, carefully selecting colours and thread types before beginning the process of embroidery. I intentionally leave portions of the photograph unstitched, allowing the image to breathe and the photographic elements to remain visible. This Brolga Trio was photographed in the Northern Rivers Region of NSW on a fine early morning after the fog had lifted. There was a flock of 36 brolgas and I was in awe, I'd never expected to come across 1 Brolga, let alone 36. This piece was hand stitched using stranded threads, perle threads, 30% Stainless Steel/ 70% Silk threads for the 'wire' and small driftwood pieces from Nelsons Bay beaches for the fence posts.
