Nostalgia is a still life composed of a draped frayed silk scarf once worn by my mother and a loose assembly of small personal items of my own: a mirror from India, a dictionary, a sheet of music, a Frida Kahlo button from an exhibition in Rome, a glass necklace. The combination of items expressed my feelings and understanding of the influence on me of my brilliant mother, and this awareness found its way onto palette and paper, fuelling a meditation on the interconnectedness of visual memory, interior dialogue and emotional reflections, and their relationship to material objects. I initially sketched the image in charcoal and washed it in burnt sienna ink, abandoning early the horizon line, and explored the image further in acrylic paint.
