The work explores a blindness produced by comfort rather than ignorance. Immersed in consumption and small luxuries, the figure has arrived at a sweet, dreamlike detachment from everything beyond the room. Famine, war, displacement, and the steady damage being done to the planet have become things she no longer sees. She remains within a comfortable interior, her hand covering her eyes as she smiles. The room is rendered as seductive because that is how this state of mind feels from the inside. The hand is painted with precision while the dress dissolves into loose, gestural brushwork, drawing attention to the deliberate act of looking away. The hand becomes both barrier and symbol, marking the distance between the individual and the world beyond. At the heart of the work is a simple proposition: awareness begins with the choice to lower the hand, open the eyes, and see.
