Unspoken explores the quiet emotions that are often felt but never expressed. The closed eyes, lifted face and elongated form create a sense of stillness and introspection, capturing a moment where the subject appears caught between vulnerability and strength. I wanted the work to feel calm at first glance, while still holding a sense of emotion beneath the surface. The piece was inspired by my ongoing interest in the human face and the way expression, posture and colour can communicate without words. Rather than creating a realistic portrait of a particular person, I was interested in building a figure through simplified shapes, confident linework and exaggerated features. The deep navy tones contrast with warmer orange, cream and muted blue, allowing the face to emerge from the darker areas while creating movement throughout the composition. The loose, vertical brushwork behind the figure also reflects the spontaneous and intuitive way I like to paint. I am a Sydney based artist whose practice focuses on bold, contemporary figurative work, alongside still life and other familiar subjects. My work is characterised by expressive lines, simplified forms and strong colour combinations. I am drawn to creating pieces that feel recognisable but not overly realistic, leaving space for the viewer to interpret the mood or story for themselves. Through my work, I aim to capture moments, feelings and subjects in a way that feels both personal and open-ended.
